Atlanta City Council Approves Controversial Skybridge Over MLK Drive Despite Community Backlash

Georgia state lawmakers will soon be able to travel between the state Capitol and a new legislative office building via a $10 million skybridge over Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, following approval from the Atlanta City Council on Monday.

The legislation passed 10 to 2 despite opposition from some council members and downtown leaders who argued the bridge would detract from revitalization efforts and mar the Capitol’s historic appearance. The elevated walkway is part of a larger $400 million redevelopment of Capitol Hill, aimed at improving safety and accessibility for the public.

This approval, however, has sparked debates among lawmakers and community members. The controversial skybridge has raised concerns about its impact on downtown revitalization and historic preservation.

Some council members, as well as downtown leaders, have expressed their opposition to the skybridge, citing potential negative effects on the ongoing revitalization efforts in the area. They also argue that the skybridge would take away from the historic appearance of the Capitol, which is already celebrating 136 years of existence.

Despite these concerns, the Atlanta City Council voted in favor of the skybridge with a majority of 10 to 2.

This decision has not been without its critics, with lawmakers such as Dozier and Farokhi voicing their reservations about the bridge. They have voiced concerns about the potential decrease in foot traffic as well as the impact on the aesthetic of the historic Capitol.
