Severe Storms Leave Thousands in Atlanta Without Power as More Weather Warnings Loom
On Thursday, severe storms rocked through Georgia, causing widespread power outages that affected thousands of residents in the state. The high winds, reaching up to 80 mph, caused downed trees and power lines in suburban neighborhoods, leaving many without electricity. As of Thursday morning, Georgia Power and Georgia EMC reported over 25,000 customers without power.
According to forecasters, there are more scattered storms expected later in the day, with a continued risk for damaging winds and heat index levels that are higher than usual. This has prompted advisories for heat precautions and concerns about air quality reaching unhealthy levels, specifically for sensitive groups.
Despite the current outages and the severe weather conditions, power companies are working hard to restore service to affected areas. As of 9:45 a.m., Georgia Power reported around 18,000 customers without power, primarily in metro Atlanta and Middle Georgia. While Georgia EMC noted over 7,000 outages.
However, the good news is that the storms are expected to be less severe for the rest of the day. So, while there may still be storms, they are not expected to cause as much damage as the ones experienced this morning. But despite this, it is still important to stay hydrated and cautious of the unhealthy air quality as temperatures remain in the low 90s.
